The Kindle 2009 DX or K2?

There are many e-book reader users and even prospective users that have wondered how much of a makeover the Kindle 2 has gone through to create the latest ebook reader from Amazon, the Kindle 2009 DX. Beginning last May, the DX first became available, so should you upgrade from your K2 to a DX in the near future? If so, then read further to get information on both devices. A comparison between the DX and the K2 can give you some quick and reliable reference points that can help you decide which will be the best product for your needs.

If you choose the Kindle 2009 DX, you will enjoy an overall size of 10.4″ x 7.2″ x 0.38″, while the K2 measurements are a bit smaller, at 8″ x 5.3″ x 0.36″. Although both devices are thinner than almost any typical paperback, at one-third of an inch deep, the DX weighs slightly more than 10 ounces and the K2 weighs almost 19 ounces. Keeping this in mind, if you are planning to bring your electronic reader with you on your travels, then the K2 is more portable.

In order to provide a good comparison between Amazon’s two devices, the storage capacity of each must be taken into consideration as well. The DX provides a 4GB internal memory, double the 2GB capacity in the K2. To put it a different way, with the DX, you can store almost 3,500 novels, while the K2 holds approximately 1,500.

When using the K2, users have encountered difficulties being able to read PFD files because they required file conversion that was possible only through an email to Amazon. Additionally, this support incurred extra costs. The good news is that with the DX, you are able to directly download PDF files onto your device, because PDF support has been integrated into the DX.

Price is another important factor to consider when choosing a wireless reading device. The DX retails for around $489, while the K2 costs around $359. Even if the price of the DX is too much for your budget, you should still consider it, since it has so many great options.

Comparing the two devices side by side, the clear standout is the Kindle 2009 DX electronic reader. The only real disadvantage is that it is around $130 dollars more than the K2 model. If you are looking for advanced features, and especially the PDF capability, then the DX is the model to purchase. Though the K2 can get your toe into the e-reader market, the DX can help you jump right in.
