Jim decided to vote on his way to work to try to avoid the long lines that would be forming later in the day. He walked over to the machine after a very brief wait and proceeded to use the touch screen to record his vote. Later, he stopped at the ATM machine to take out some money and followed the directions to use the multi touch technology it required. He really did not even think about the fact that many other people had also used these machines before him and was not at all concerned that he may have picked up some germs that could make him very sick. In fact, as he got his coffee in the employee snack room he helped himself to a donut from the huge container on the table without even washing his hands. This is just one way that people can catch the flu. Every day, we are hearing that the flu is spreading at an disturbing speed and that caution is advised about how we are protecting ourselves against it. Five of the most talked about and useful ways of avoiding this illness are as follows:
1. Hand Washing: This should be done well and frequently to be helpful. We have all heard that we should sing a little song like “Happy Birthday to You” to ourselves to guarantee we spend at least 20 seconds washing our hands. Letting the water get to a warm temperature is also recommended for the maximum benefits.
2. Hand Sanitizer: This is also a fine alternative when you cannot actually wash your hands because there are no facilities nearby. It is a good practice to use a hand sanitizer after making contact with anything that other folks are touching in a public way and that includes phones, revolving doors, and ATM machines.

4. Sneeze into your elbow: It used to be an unofficial rule that people should sneeze into their hand but when you stop to consider it that is a guaranteed way to spread germs to others. Sneezing into your arm around the area of your elbow allows a person to isolate droplets that might otherwise end up making someone sick.
5. Stay home: When you have any signs that you may be coming down with a cold virus or the flu it is important to stay home from work to avoid exposing others. A minor cough or a low grade fever can turn into a bad case of the flu in just a few hours and it is kinder to stay home than to take your illness into the office. For the first time in many years employers are encouraging their employees to use sick time even if they do not appear to be seriously ill because they do not want to take a chance of exposing workers to the flu.

It has always seemed that people with muscles will always pick on someone who doesn’t have them, but many programs promised to help a person change that. Strolling around the mall before it opens is a well known activity.
The last thing a person needs is support of others, which can be found in a gym, or at the mall, or even on the internet where people often join chat rooms like the biggest loser forum. Having others around you helping you make it through the diet and exercise process is a very useful tool for a person to have. That support can be the difference between success and failure in a fitness regimen. If you are unhappy with the way that you look, then there is nothing truly stopping you from improving it. No one can tell you that it can’t be done It just takes time and effort.

There are items in this world that we have decided are valuable, but we don’t {often|usually| think about what value actually is. Certainly gold has a value, right? If you put a certain amount of gold onto some scales, you’ll be able to figure out what it’s worth. But where does the value arise from? Is there something you can actually gain from a bar of gold beyond its value? You can place a pig on some digital scale and see that it weighs much more, and provides a real service in the form of food, yet I’d say it’s probably better to have the bar of gold at this point in time. So what is it about the way we value things that discounts their actual practical value? It makes sense that oil, food and water are assigned a value, but what about fashion items, metals and jewelry?
The first thing we could say that gives something like gold a value is the fact that it is rare. When an item is wanted by people, it’s subject to the law of supply and demand. The less something is available, the more individuals will be willing to spend in order to get it. The more individuals who desire something, the more likely a richer person will be willing to offer a higher amount. So the products that are worth the most are those which many people want, but which are very rare.
So in the case of gold, it has both aspects of this to its credit. So its rareness is a obviously occurring fact, but why is it that so many people want it? The reason is clear enough, they want it because other people want it. There’s an interesting predicament involved, like a snake biting its own tail. People want it because it’s worth something, it’s worth something because people want it. The actual practical use of gold is probably absolutely zero, except for the fact that it appears nice.
Fashion is one of the areas that affect the price of items that have no practical value. The term “perceived obsolescence,” is used to refer to the moment in which a product is seen as no longer worth anything, despite it having lost none of its capabilities. This is the function of fashion, it creates a sense of value, or lack of value, when the practical value has not been altered.
What would happen if gold was out of fashion? This will probably not happen in our lifetimes, if ever, as the entire economy of the world is somewhat reliant on the value of gold for keeping everything else afloat. There’s the perception that actual money is only valuable because we all agree it is, whereas gold is seen as something “really” valuable.
So if your partner doesn’t buy you enough expensive jewelry, maybe it’s for the best. The actual application of this is nil, and you’d be better off enjoying life without worrying about superficial products that are, in the deepest sense of the word, meaningless.
