Young Jeezy has been through it all, the worse and the worst, before taking the limelight of life with his niche in rapping. He was born Jay Jenkins on October 12, 1977 and was a native to Columbia, South Carolina. Together with his family, he relocated to Duncan Block of Georgia and soon lived in juggled custody. His parents decided to end their marriage and shared the custody of him with their relatives. Frequently being in his aunts’ house, Jeezy developed a close bond to his cousins who later introduced him to the dark world of drug dealing. By 12, he was already making money through selling the illegal substance and got arrested several times for it. At one point he even had to serve 9 months in a boot camp as a result of being busted by the police.

Jeezy has described his childhood as ‘empty’. He has made innumerable references in his music to his previous occupation as a cocaine dealer, although he rarely provides details of his childhood in interviews. Also, according to his lyrics, which may or may not be factual, he has or had an uncle named Grady. This portion of his life, as is often the case with rappers, remains highly veiled and subject to much exaggeration in order to increase his street reputation. However, there is no doubt that Young Jeezy was involved at least to some degree in the illegal cocaine trade, and he is affiliated somehow with the slightly defunct Black Mafia Family.

Young Jeezy also won an award for ‘Hustla Of the Year” Soon his name traveled to P. Diddy’s label, Bad Boy Records that signed him in 2004 as one part of rap group Boyz N Da Hood. With the boys, he released a self-titled album in 2005 that peaked at #5 on Billboard Hot 200 chart. Despite the success, he left the group and the label to go under Def Jam as a solo artist. Spanning only a month apart from the Boyz N Da Hood album, he released a debut solo album ‘Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101′ under the new label. It went on platinum at the end of 2005 and propelled him as a capable solo artist. Like many other rap artists, Jeezy was a vocal one in what was happening in the society. When the Hurricane Katrina struck in August 2005, he criticized the way government handled the crisis and opened his house to provide shelters for the victims. However, being a true street artist, he was also never off from controversy and rivalries. One day, my grandmother decided that she would ask for a family picture of my two cousins, my aunt and uncle, my parents, my brother and me as a gift. At first, we thought it would be a good idea to have a portrait artist do a portrait painting of the family; however, since we all do not live in the same city, this was just too much of a challenge to coordinate, so my aunt and my dad thought it would be a good idea to just hire a photographer to take some pictures. It turned out it may not have been the smartest thing, in the end.

My dad and my aunt chose to take the pictures on the day that my family was coming up for my cousin’s high school graduation. We got to my aunt and uncle’s house to discover that no one at the home was ready, so we waited while my cousins picked out clothes, trying many different outfits on before finding the right ones. Finally we were ready to drive over to the outdoor area that had been picked to be the sight of the pictures.

When we arrived at the place where the photos were to be taken, my aunt told my dad that the original photographer she hired was unable to make the appointment, so he was sending a replacement instead, that he promised would be just as good. This new photographer, however, was a half hour late to the appointment. He also did not say he was sorry for his tardiness. He was not very prepared either because he was constantly going to run back and forth to his van several times to get the right equipment. Sometimes he did not even have the things he needed to take the photographs.

It took a very long time to get these pictures taken because we had to wait on the photographer to get everything that he needed and to try to search for the items he did not have, but needed. It was hard to get even a few great pictures because the sun was so bright and it kept shining in our eyes. Also, some of us were getting hungry, since we had not eaten lunch. My family had been in the car for quite awhile before these pictures so we were all pretty tired too. Needless to say, these pictures did not turn out the way we wanted.

Finally, it took what seemed like forever to get the pictures back for us to see and for my grandmother to pick some to keep. When my grandmother and the rest of us saw the final products, we were really upset. Some of the pictures had a glare in them and it was much more difficult than it should have been to find a picture where everyone was smiling, since some were squinting and a few people had their eyes closed from the bright sun. It was really troubling to see that my grandmother was disappointed because the only thing she wanted was a picture of the family and it really didn’t work out very well. Hopefully, the next time everyone attempts to get a family photograph, things will go much better!
